B1 German in 6 Months (Step-by-Step Guide)
German B1? This is the question most of the German learners ask themselves immediately after making the decision to learn German! When the program is crystal clear, no need to search about “the time needed to reach a particular level”; for instance when you start learning German with a structured program and/or with the help of an experienced tutor, so you do not have to worry about your deadline. Yet there is sometimes lack of time for those who have decided to migrate to Germany in a short time. Let’s dive into the answer step by step and see how it is possible to learn German B1 in just 6 months!
Is it possible to reach B1 German in 6 months (24 weeks)?
The answer is YES. Considering the studies and their results, we can conclude that reaching B1 German in 6 month is not unrealistic. Based on studies from the U.S. Foreign Service Institute (FSI) and similar linguistic research, learning a language to a professional level takes between 600 and 2,200+ hours. Depending on how closely the target language resembles your native language. For English speakers, this ranges from roughly 6 months (24 weeks). For romance languages to over 1.5 years (88 weeks) for languages like Mandarin or Arabic.
FSI has also categorized the languages according to their difficulty. German stands in Category II. Which means learning German to a professional level takes approximately 750 to 900 classroom hours for native English speakers. Meaning it is relatively straightforward for English speakers to learn. Generally requiring 30 to 36 weeks of intensive study to achieve “Professional Working Proficiency” (roughly equivalent to B2/C1 level). Furthermore, we have had bunch of German learners in Deutschfluss who have successfully passed B1 German tests like Goethe, ÖSD, Telc, etc in only 6 months of dedicated learning. If you had noticed the previous sentence, I said: DEDICATED learners, so you need to dedicate yourself to learning German in case you want to succeed in 6 months. Yet there are other factors that we have to consider while planning to reach B1 German in 6 months.
Factors you have to consider before planning to reach B1 German in 6 months
As we mentioned earlier, it is not impossible to reach B1 German in 6 months. But there are some factors that you have to consider such as:
- prior languages knowledge
- intensity
- consistency
- goal
Let’s dive into these topics one by one:
Prior languages knowledge
If you already speak English or if you are a native English speaker, you have higher chance of progressing quickly in German. Not only English speakers, but also other language learners that have studied other languages rather than their mother tongue have high chance of learning German quickly in a shorter time. If you already speak any Germanic language such as Dutsch, you have a greater chance!
Intensity
The time you spend to learn German and the program you follow is of a major importance. Because of the time limit and according to the difficulty of German, you may need an intensive program to progress quickly, but not just to skip the parts, so an intensive structured program and a tutor’s guidance could be a realistic choice.
Consistency
You might know that consistency in each subject and level leads to success. The point is not learning partially for a long time. The point is learning and sticking to a guided and structured program EVERY single day.
Goal
Another factor that may affect your journey of German learning is your goal. Imagine someone who wants to travel to Germany and is willing to learn the language for travel purposes, so they may not need a very structured program or intensity to learn the language deeply. In comparison to a traveler if you tend to work or study in Germany or any other German-speaking country, you might need more of a deep study and structured learning led by a tutor or someone who could accompany you using a clear roadmap.
A roadmap to B1 German in 6 months
The first thing you have to clarify while starting a journey is your goal. Ask yourself “What am I going to do in Germany” or a similar question. Why are you learning German? Are you going to work or study in Germany? Or willing to visit Germany for a short time for pleasure?
After defining your goal, you have to consider the deadline for learning German! If you have enough time, meaning a year or more, so do not rush to learn German! Because learning a language is better to be done in a step-by-step manner, in order not to get exhausted. Yet if there is a strict deadline, so you need a structured plan to reach B1 German. If you are willing to get familiar with the content that you need in each level based on CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), our programs page may help you; because we have a clear roadmap of each level in our courses. Below you can also find a basic roadmap to reach B1 German.
As mentioned earlier, you need approximately 750 – 900 hours of classroom to reach a proficient level in German, so let’s divide this into levels:
How long does it take to reach German A1 using this roadmap?
In A1 German you need to know basic vocabulary, foundational grammar (present tense, basic sentence structure, nominative/accusative cases), and the ability to handle daily survival situations. Based on the deadline we have, we have to cover this level in 60 – 150 hours of instruction, which is possible to be handled in ~2 months or 8 weeks of studying. But you should focus on core grammar, basic verb conjugation, and fundamental vocabulary.
How long does it take to reach German A2 using this roadmap?
In A2 German you need to understand basic, everyday conversations, read simple texts, and write short messages about your life. Key requirements include mastering present and perfect tenses, modal verbs, dative/accusative cases, and basic subclauses (weil, dass).
Based on the deadline we have, we have to cover this level in 150 – 260 hours of instruction, which is also possible to be handled in ~2 months or 8 weeks of study. Besides, increase focus on sentence structure, everyday conversations, and complex grammar (e.g., past tense, cases). Start watching Youtube and listening to podcasts.
How long does it take to reach German B1 using this roadmap?
Finally, in B1 German you need an independent language proficiency level, typically achieved after 350-650 hours. You must be able to communicate on familiar topics (work, school), manage daily travel situations, and write coherent personal or formal texts. Key requirements include mastering intermediate grammar (Konjunktiv II, passive voice, relative clauses) and having a solid vocabulary.
Conclusion
After all, by doing a simple calculation, you will find out the time you need to spend in a class to reach B1 German. If we consider the minimum time required for reaching B1 German is 350 hours, in 6 months you have 24 weeks. So 350/24= ~15 hours per week, meaning that you need to spend ~2.5 hours daily study to reach B1 German.
To conclude, everything mentioned above is a normal pace of study and sometimes may seem unrealistic and unachievable. You should also consider all the factors, which may affect the time we need to learn a language. Do not be unrealistic at all, do not follow any method that is offering a fast-paced language learning. And do not postpone language learning, especially German to a future time. As mentioned above, it is possible to learn quickly, but based on our +8 years of experience (on the day of publishing this article) in Deutschfluss, it is better to have a clear roadmap for yourself and based on your own needs in a normal pace to absorb the language and get the best out of it.
